Purity Law

Leder:
Antik Tabak
Stick:
Champagner

Before the Purity Law came into force, all sorts of “natural drugs” were added to beer, not just to send the consumer into nirvana. Thorn apple, deadly nightshade, gentian, opium poppy and mandrake were considered pagan ritual plants, which the brewers used as psychoactive beer additives. We were particularly taken with the story of the mandrake root; according to legend, the nightshade plant thrives best on gallows mounds, feeds on the liquids of the hanged people and was viewed by the Catholic authorities as “evil and pagan” due to its similarity to the shape of the human body.
